What food should I take hiking and backpacking?

Some Good Food Options

Main Meal Choices

Pudding Choices

  • Snacks: 4 Snickers bars. 1000cal (approx)
  • Snacks: 6 Muesli bars. 900cal (approx)
  • Snacks: 250g Bag of mixed nuts and raisins. 1290cal (approx)

  • Drinks: 4 Cup-a-soup type drink sachets, 2 per 350ml cup. 340cal (approx total)
  • Drinks: Hot chocolate with powdered milk & sugar, enough for 2 350ml portions. 600cal (approx total)

Here is a picture of one of my overnight meals, note that some are out of sight still in my food bag, I also carry 250g of oats and 250g of lentils together with beef stock, chicken stock, salt & pepper, powdered garlic and dried mixed herbs in my foodbag for emergencies or pepping up meals.

I hope you find some aspects of this useful, I have been hiking and wildcamping for many years and I'm still learning, I'm currently working on getting a survivable knowledge of wild edibles, but more on that in another article..

Whenever you go out always take enough food plus an emergency ration that will keep you going for at least a day. Always be safe and ALWAYS leave no trace as you found it or better! - Enjoy nature responsibly.
