Making a wood whittling knife from a chisel

Stage Five :

So it's nearing completion, I shaped the handle to how it's going to look using firstly my Condor Bushlore knife to carve the approximate shape I require and secondly I used wood rasps to get finer definition, contours and smooth out the carving.

Ohhh the joys of sanding... Lucky I have a lot of paper, I sanded the wood to a very fine finish and varnished with outdoor waterproof varnish. After it had dried I sanded it again and gave it a final weatherproof finish

Stage Six :

It's completed and in regular use, I had a little scrap bit of leather so I made a small sheath as it is very sharp, everything on my test stick you see in the photo was carved using it.

It's extremely comfortable to use and the blade is a great shape for me, it can perform a variety of cuts, which is what I need, I found out after using it a while that the steel is not stainless due to surface rust, it is incredibly hard so I'm assuming the original chisel was some sort of HC steel.

Dimensions

  • Handle Length : 142mm (4.5")
  • Handle Height : 24mm (1")
  • Handle Width : 20mm (3/4")

  • Blade Length : 38mm
  • Blade Depths : 10mm (Handle end) 11mm (Belly) 1.5mm (Tip)
  • Spine Thickness : 2mm
